  How To Measure Boxes

Box dimensions are displayed as: Length x Breadth x Height

We always express the internal dimensions of our products to enable you to accurately calculate whether your item(s) will fit.

Dimensions are usually expressed in millimetres (mm) to allow for optimum accuracy.

If you think in centimetres (cm) just divide the mm value by 10 to get cm.

If you prefer to work in inches, click the 'View' button on your selected product(s) and we have included our product dimensions in inches. Or, you can use our Conversion Tool.

Measuring A Box

There are 3 measurements to any box:

Length  - Looking at the base of a box, we define the length from the longest side.

Breadth (Width) - Looking at the base of a box, we define the breadth from the shortest side.

Height (Depth) - At the side of the box, measuring from the base to the top, will determine the height.

What Size Box I Need For My Item(s)?

Get a tape measure, as its easier and more accurate then a ruler and decide which unit of measure you want to work in. We recommend mm or cm.

If you're putting several items in one box, that sit together well (e.g are boxed shaped), the easiest way is to arrange them as you'd like to box them. Simply measure the length, breadth and height of your items together. This will give you your minimum box dimensions for accommodating your products, in the arrangement as measured. So don't forget which way round you stacked your items when measuring!

Alternatively, for greater accuracy, measure the length, breadth and height of each of the items you want to put in the same box. Add together all of the length, breadth and height measurements you have to determine the minimum size box you need.  Also, you need to make a note for every item, which "side" you called the length, breadth and height, otherwise you'll struggle to pack your items in your box as measured for!

Cushioning And Protection For Your Item(s)

Consider whether you'll need a protective material such as bubble wrap or polystyrene loose fill chips to cushion your product(s) and prevent damage during transit or storage. If so, allow extra space around your products and increase the size of your box by adding to your length, breadth and height measurements.

The more extra space left in your box(es), the more protective material you can fit in and the more protection you'll give to your item(s).

Just In Case You're Interested... Calculating The Volume Of A Box

The following calculation will give you the cubic volume of a box, in the unit of measure you are calculating in. For example mm, cm or inches.

This might be useful if it doesn't really matter which way round your item(s) is packed, as long as it fits!

Length x Breadth x Height = Cubic Volume

Note: Make sure all of the measurements you are using are in the same unit!
